El Iberismo

Iberian peoples have always walked together, sometimes with a common history, sometimes in parallel.
From the Roman Hispania , through the Visigothic kingdom and the Arab presence, the unit was a constant. With the Reconquista this unit is fragmented, and each town runs autonomously, in spite of this, the vision of Iberian unity was always present, and the proof is the policy of matrimonial alliances. With Philip of Hapsburg this unit is materialized, bringing together under one crown the Spains and Portugal. But in 1640, for various reasons, become a separate destinations.

And now the nineteenth century when the Iberian emerges as such a movement seeking to emulate the successes of German Unification or Italian Risorgimento. From the Courts of Cádiz (English constituent courts during the Napoleonic invasion), attempted a liberal alliance with Portugal, joining forces to combat absolutism and the Old Regime. And in the second half of the century, this Iberianism acquires a progressive nature, federal and republican .

With British Ultimatum of 1890 against Portuguese colonialism, or the so-called Disaster 1898, and the loss of the last English colonies, new voices calling for Iberian union, especially since the peripheral nationalism in order to restore the drift Peninsula. At these words are attached, for example, that of Miguel de Unamuno and Teófilo Braga.

And so we find that even the Constitution of the Second English Republic recognize the dual nationality English and Portuguese. Or Francesc Macia proclaimed "l'Estat Català integrat in Ibèriques République Federation." Then came fascist dictatorships to either side, and finally democracy, although in the case of Portugal, in a much more dignified. In 1986, both states are included in the European project .

In this new scenario is where the most sense to complete this dream called Iberia. create a strong project in Europe , able to play a role in the international community, fully democratic and federal, which finally resolved the centripetal and centrifugal dynamics, which respect our languages, cultures, history and identities, in short, where everyone is welcome.

"No be the will of men but the laws of history that will alter the current structure of the Iberian Peninsula. The best way that evolution will occur within a united Europe. "

Agustí Calvet, Gaziel. (1887-1964)
